Yup! He is a turquoise mutation green-cheeked conure :)

Into birds, huh? What can you tell me about birds in captivity??

I was always fascinaed by birds, almost as much as reptiles....

Although I have decided that I would hold off on the bird until I had more time, space and resources. I hear they get bored very easily and can get very obnoxious if you don't have the time to spend with them. Also, I hear they can be noisy, and i'm in an apartment at the moment.

BUT, I'm always for amassing info.....

How is the temperament on conures?
They really are beautiful...

I realize this is an older thread but wanted to add a pic of our cat Cyrus.
We adopted him 2 years ago as a kitten from our apartment dumpster. It was November and there was no way I could have allowed him to stay out in the cold as a 3 or 4 month old kitten. I'm not suppose to have pets but that didn't deter me from keeping him... Thanks for looking.

You are a perfect candidate for a pigeon! They don't get bored (their brain is the size of a pea) they don't chew, they aren't loud! They are very similar in their interactions with humans to a cat or dog- except they can fly. Mine will follow me around, come when called, snuggle and be petted, etc.

I have a green cheek conure. He only likes me, and will bite anyone else. He's very loud, but I hear that green cheek conures are usually more quiet. I don't know why mine is so loud. He just likes to talk and greet me with a "hi sparky!"..I live in an apartment, and I'm always worried that someone will complain. But no one has. :)
But if you don't care about yours liking anyone else, it's definitely worth it. I love my little conure. He's my baby. You just have to spend a lot of time with them..I make sure I take mine out for at least an hour everyday..And I let him sit on top of his cage and just sit out with me.

Parrots get bored easily and require a lot of mental stimulation to prevent bad habits from developing. If you have any interest in a parrot, purchase and read Mattie Sue Athan's two books on parrot behavior. Amazon sells them. They are a must-read.

Conures can be sweet, or they can be obnoxious biters. Highly variable personality- very smart parrot in a compact form. They also have a tendency to SCREAM. Loudly. Especially in the morning. So they would not be good apartment birds. I have heard that Pionus have a softer voice than conures and make better pets for tight living quarters.

This is the Gabriel Monster. He's 20 pounds, and he likes to pounce on ANYTHING below the level of the China Cabinet lip.

This is Percy, usually the one getting pounced on. I punished him for chasing after the cat for two months before I caught Gabriel in action starting the fight with him.

Another picture of my fat cat on the china cabinet. BTW, I would NEVER try to shave him. I fear what he would do to me afterwards. :sidestep:

Yeah, he's been lording over me since I was 18. I can't even roll over in my sleep or he'll bite my feet.

He's also affectionately known as "Booga" but it makes him all grumpy. Whatever you do, I know the fat, fluffy belly with his big man kitty titties is so tempting when he rolls over on his back in front of you. But don't touch it, ever, for any reason.

HAHAHA

I know I've almost gotten a claw through my eye for trying to use a nice, soft, fluffy belly as a pillow.

Here's our three dogs. I still live with my parents, so they really belong to to them.. but they're like the whole family's. My corn snake is my only pet that belongs only to me.

Taco, the Chihuahua. He's cuuuuuute, and likes to take naps with us. And he really likes Shelby, even though she's too big(and old) for him. lol.
Pets002.jpg

Butters(a.k.a. "Professor Chaos"), the Cockapoo. He likes to chew up anything made of paper into a million pieces, will grab things off of tables, and just generally lives to make the house a mess. But, even so, he's friendly, happy-go-lucky, and smart.

Shelby, the Boxer. She's getting really old. She's 11, and has been getting lots of tumors

Couldn't help but post this one.

I love his expression in that picture, lol. CaseyUndead, I know what you mean about the paper. Percy loves toilet paper, paper towels, newspaper, papertowel tubes, the coat hangers with the cardboard on them, shoeboxes, any important paperwork I'm saving, bills, paper plates...etc. He loves to get in the trash can, drag said paper items out, chew them into a zillion pieces and then carefully carpet the entire living room with said pieces just for me. To show he loves me. He also loves cat cookies. :puke01:

Empty plastic bottle (without the caps) are much loved around here. Oliver will ignore expensive toys in order to destroy plastic bottles.

Thanks for the advice!

I've been doing sparse on and off research on parrots for a looong while now. I know I'd have enough time to spend with the bird, but I want to make 100% sure I know what I'm gettting into because parrots can live so long. I'd never want to abandon a pet to a shelter because I couldn't handle it anymore. Thanks for the book recommendations as well.

I've looked into it a little more since your guys' posts, and I like the info, look and sound of what I found on both the blue headed pionus and the brown-headed parrot.

I don't mind the bird being a one-person bird, my boyfriend doesn't take much of an interest in my pets anyways. He tolerates and treats them very well, and laughs a little at my obsessions, but he's not really that interested per se.

What I'm more worried about is weather the bird would be overly obnoxious for other household members to deal with even if they aren't really involved. I'm planning on waiting on a bird until there is enough rooms in the house to sleep far away from it....! I have heard they like to vocalize early morning and late evening....

I have looked into maybe getting a ringnecked dove as well. Anyone know anyone who has a dove?

If I did get a bird, you can be sure I would be prepared. I just wanted to hear straight from the loin's mouth-

-Who has a bird?

-How do other family members/ roommates deal?

-How is the bird's temperament?

-What else should I be aware of?

A couple of recent pics of Lord Vader, the evil chihuahua puppy. He's cute, but he sure is one disobedient s.o.b..
