Opinion: WORST pet snake?

  1. Retics; Big, aggressive, difficult to provide for
  2. Anacondas; Messy, HUGE! aggressive
  3. the geunus "Boiga"; Hard to feed...I still want a mangrove though!

I would say these would be my top 10...

1) Kaa, because he hypnotizes you with his eyes before trying to eat you...
2) Hoop Snake, they can bite their tail and roll after you before striking!
3) Iron Cobra, though the ruby eyes are awe-some, it's made of metal and has really long fangs. Very hard to kill...
4) Cobrat, they hide in pots and lunge! Even more dangerous if your name is Mario... or Luigi...
5) Two words, Kobra Kahn!
6) Mara, It exists in the minds of its victims and can transmit itself telepathically aaand it lives on fear! Scary!
7) Orochimaru, because he's a Ninja! and a mean one at that... oh, and he wants your body... no, not in the good way, pervert...
8) Naga, who wants a snake with a human head? Puh-lease... "I want a mouse, give me a mouse, hey you, give me a mouse!" No thanks...
9) Sir Hiss, now that one drivessss me crazy, ssssooo sssneaky!
10) Yellow ones, I don't like yellow snakes...

and that's my list, I'm sure most of you are Googling now....

I agree with your top 2. I'm not very familiar with the "Boiga's", but I have heard of a Mangrove snake, and they are beautiful.

BTW... Sorry to be off topic, but is that a granite in your profile pic? Gorgeous :)! Is he/she yours? if so, when did you get him/her? Just a curious interest. You can PM me as to not hijack the thread if you'd like :):):)!

Michael, that is my granite from PJCR and he is my fav corn! I got him on election day. Search "Doc"

Well. I am excluding venomous snakes here because as far as I am concerned you can't consider them pets.
A pet to me is an animal you interact with... throwing in food and never holding them makes them non-pets to me. As far as I am concerned, they should not be kept- simply because you're introducing a possible threat to not only yourself but your surrounding as well.

In regards to other snakes...

big constrictors(not the dwarf versions): Anacondas, Burmese pythons, African rock pythons, Reticulated pythons- reticulated pythons in particular.

The rest is a matter of taste.

Personally I -hate- garter snakes.

LOL...Those were particularly very good choices. Thanks for the laugh.

Hey Robbie you got mean Cali's do you? I don't have a ton of experience with them but we have had one, there have been at least 6 at our local pet store and a nice large one at the pet store in the city next to me(went there last week end). Not once have I had a problem with any of them. Never been struck at, bit, or even musked. A couple of them tried to get away when getting them out of their enclosures but that is it. They are my second favorite snake, so I handle them when ever I can. Maybe they are just fooling with me so I will byuy them and then they are gonna be mean to me when I get them home?? I always seem to get warned to be careful that they are either head shy or may bite, as that is how they have been with others who have handled them.

I have finally been tagged by baby corn snakes though!

My Cali girl is one of Satan's minions come to Earth to wreak havoc and destruction on anything that looks like a finger, hand, face, arm, foot, toe, or any other body part within reach. She takes particular joy in not only simply biting/striking, but wrapping and swallowing. I'm surprised she hasn't tried to eat herself yet, but she has tried to eat almost anything I put her close to, including a snake hook, wussy glove, and a wooden spoon handle I was using before I had a small snake hook.

What about your Mex mex, Robbie? Is she evil, too?

Nope! She's a sweetie pie! But she's also not a Cali. :D LOL.
I even pulled her out in deep blue the other day to switch her tub, and she was just as calm as could be! And she's a perfect feeder, too. But she's not a Cali.

I think any freshly wild caught imported snake that has not been treated for worms or parasites is a snake from hell. Especially if you are stupid enough to think that it will eat and you will not have any problems.

Apart from that, as a matter of opinion I hate garters and similar looking snakes. Oh and I absolutly agree with the yellow snake thing, yuck! I wish Siren was a maroon chondro baby. But at least she is green now.

I keep hots and wouldn't ever have another Radiated rat.

I keep telling Robbie I have a date for his Cal. that should put the theory to rest as to whether attitude is inheritable.

When I'm older ( child out of the house) I do plan on getting a copperhead and pygmy rattlesnake!

I'd like a pygmy at some point too! And an eyelash viper. :)

Good to know. When the time comes, maybe I'll consider a mini boa instead. I've got plenty of time to decide, since we don't have anywhere near the space or the funds right now for another pet :p

YES!!!!!! Mini boa!!! I've got a wee Caulker Cay. He's just a baby right now, but he shouldn't get longer than an adult corn.

I agree with you! I'm not a fan of garters and/or ribbon snakes. And yellow...ewww. I have a butter and two butter stripes and they've got to go....

And for my list....full size retics (I plan to have a few super dwarf kids at some point) and afrocks would be my big two. Oh! And blood pythons, mainly because I don't like the looks of them. I'd never own a ball python either (except for maybe a pied or blue eyed leucy...if they were given to me).

I have a question; it kinda relates. Is it possible to keep a cobra and have it de-venomed? Sorry if it's a stupid question, my curious newbie mind...

Its called being a vemonoid. They have their vemon ducts surgically removed. Its not really healthy for the snakes and sometimes they can become venomous again so its risky.

It IS possible, but not recommended. The venomoid procedure is usually done by backyard unlicensed "vets", and the health risk to the animal is VERY high. Several venomous snakes use their venom as a way to aid in their digestion. When I decide to keep a cobra (after years of working with them with a licensed venomous expert), it would still have it's venom glands. And even then, I wouldn't have more than one or two. They are absolutely beautiful animals, and I would hate to risk their life by trying to make them "safer". Besides, if the venomoid "procedure" is done incorrectly, the venom glands grow back.
