Rat Poison

Well, well, well......

I went in for a PT/INR blood draw today, so I thought I'd resurrect this ol' dawg of a thread.

Hopefully, I'll be off the rat poison very, very, soon. If not, shrug....if so, I'll probably voluntarily go with the low-dose aspirin route as a preventive measure, given the family history.

Besides, I've got bigger fish to fry....that black furry thing in my avatar has an "ear flap hematoma", which is not life-threatening, but it makes perfectly symmetrical moosh of his look out of kilter......like Panther Chameleon eyes.

Good news! I've had something with an ear flap hemotoma- I think it had to be lanced and then was NBD after that. Can't remember if it was a dog or horse??

Oh poor Bo, did he bash his ear in the field? I think the blood has to be aspirated to stop a cauliflower ear developing
My educated guess is that it's from a couple of factors; I drill him on water retrieves about 2-3 times a week, and when a dog shakes water off, the whole head get moving and flops the ears against the skull. On top of that, he's developed some allergies this summer, and so he's been scratching more frequently (although no so much around his ears).

I walked him over to Connie Hurley's last week, where she lanced and expressed it - a veritable fountain of blood and serum - but I was advised that it was only temporary. True enough, the hematoma was back in a day.

So yeah, it'll have to be cut and drained - I've got a couple of weeks to decide on a vet before the blood coagulates in the ear. They'll leave a small hole for it to drain completely, and he'll have sutures for two weeks. No swimming, obviously (which is fine, because with the recent rains, the mosquitoes would carry us away like raptors).

OK, fan of irony that I am, I just realized I'm talking about blood clots in this thread.....that aren't mine. ;)

So now, I'm shopping around for a vet who will give me the best price, and won't "up sell" me with things like a nail trim and an Elizabethan collar (already have one, thank you). Just do the procedure, and get out of my way.

The downfall of all this, unfortunately, is that it has taken a huge bite out of my snake purchase budget. It looks like I'll be going to the Tinley Park show just to socialize.

Grrrrr.

Do you think Bo'll mind just 1 picture of him with the collar on? (Preferably with your lovely self in shot too!)

Woot Woot Woot Woohoo!!!!!

Buh-BYE, Warfarin!!!!

Just had a consult with my doc this morning.....and with the way things are going (read:"good"), I'll be rolling off of the blood thinner script once I empty out this refill.

What follows? Well, I'll be doing the low-dose aspirin therapy thingy (probably for the rest of my life, given the family history), and we'll run through some tests to see if there are any genetic factors to my hypercoagulation, like this, for example.

So, now that I'll be saving a few dollars per month from scripts, where will that go?

More snakes, of course!

You're just now coming off that stuff?!? Yikes!
Glad you didn't just dry up and die somewhere behind your walls..
I think if you eat rat poison for 10 months and live you gain superpowers. (As far as I understand it...)

Only if it's combined with exposure to gamma rays.

Wait, that's The Hulk. Nevermind.
