Thou shall have a fishie...

He's awesome! (Elle, Jennrosefx's betta is just like the one I saved in the fishbowl+boy incident)

Yup only about 2 1/2 inches!

I bought from the guy I did because hes so great with fish. He refuses to sell to anyone who walks in, grabs the setup then asks for fishies! I think he refuses more sales than anything else, just because of novice stupidity. And he guarantees the fish for life!

This is my token fish...also a betta. He's about 3 1/2 years old. I inherited him from my mother. I couldn't remember what she had named him...so he has a few names. Usually, it's Sir Bloop Bloop Mc Looky...hahahaha. I've been calling him Darth Betta alot too though. LOL. He haaates me. He especially hated me when my hair was red. He thought I was anouther betta!

LOL hes lovely Jenn... I'm thinkin I should get some bettas now!

Life? That's freaking awesome!
The only way I manage to keep my sanity at work is knowing that I can refuse to sell fish to customers. And without seeming so rude I do so on a daily basis when I find out:they've got the tank in their shopping cart, they set it up yesterday, they've already got 15 fish in a 10 gallon :bang:

Do eeeet, dooo eeeeet
Go out and get yourself a 2 gallon kritter keeper, cheap and easy to set up. Bettas don't honestly need, nor do most of them prefer filters because their fins are like big sails. But unfortunatly if you go bigger you do need a filter to keep the tank not nasty :D
Just don't get anything smaller than a gallon!

How do you keep your tanks warm? The room temperature here in winter drops below 70/65 consistantly. I saw a guy use heat mats before :shrugs:

Oooh I would not recomend the heat mats, being the little uth things?
No no not safe for fishie tanks.
Bettas being tropical fish I try to keep my bigger tanks between 76-80 however bettas are ok up to 82, but not over that.
HowEVER despite being tropical fish bettas CAN survive without a heater, their life span will however be shortened :/ But like most fish as long as there isn't a drastic change in tempatures most fish adapt just fine. Bettas are VERY hardy fish in my book as long as you don't mess them up to much.
All of that being said, you can use any hang over the tank or in tank heaters, obviously low wattage ones. Just as long as the actual heater itself isn't touching the plastic (just saying plastic assuming for a small container) it will be ok :D

Hmm I thought so... I suppose if I placed the tank next to the clownfish one, some heat would pass on. I wouldnt let the area around their tank drop below 75 anyways.

You got me thinkin girl, damn!

edit: thanks for the link, unfortunatley I'm in Scotland and the prices are sky high... for everything. The saltie setup will cost about £200...

I have a betta obession in case you couldn't tell.
If you really wanna do it set up the habitat first and put a thermometer in it, watch it for a few days checking up on it ever so often to see what it gets like :D
And just remember, never buy a betta death trap that doesn't come with a lid and barely has enough room for the fish to turn around *shudders*
Bettas are notrious jumpers though so just watch out!

I read about that! I can't really imagine keeping an aquarium without a hood or lid anyways!...

People do it anyways and then they keep them in thos freaking little cups that are little more than a pint of water, so I don't listen to those people anymore. :flames:

Yay a 3.5year old betta! That means he's being properly taken care of, and they're anywhere from 3months-1yr old when you obtain them from the petstore too.
Looks like a healthy happy boy! :D

I've had him going two years...and my mom had him for about 1 year...and yeah, who knows how old he was when he got her! I clean out his tank quite often, make sure it doesn't get too cold in the winter, and occasionally give him a mirror for a short while to get his little brain going and give him "someone" to be tough too! LOL! I don't know what thier average lifespan is (under idea conditions). I've been told everything from 4 years....to 9 years!!!

Aside from having to clean his tank so often, he's realy super easy to care for. I suppose if you put one in a 3 gallon tank, you could use a filter...but anything smaller, a filter would make it unhappy. In the wild they live in rice patties, and the water is quite still. They don't like alot of current. They're Spunky little animals though! Fiesty and alot of fun. And they come in ALOT of really beautiful colors.

And they WILL jump out! My mom had a betta before this one, years ago, that she kept in a little bowl in the kitchen. One night she was thirsty in the middle of the night, and walked into the kitchen...to find him on the floor! Who knows how long he was down there!...but she scooped him up and put him back in his bowl...and miraculously he was fine. He went on to live anouther year (so yeah, who knows what long term effects it caused). I'm assuming the only way he survived that is because they can breath air? And I imagine he couldn't have been out too long, or he would have dried up (eep!). Anyways...yesss...LIDS!...GOOD!

This is terrible... I am franticly reading up on bettas now! I had never considered them as I thought, ooohh big fancy beautiful fish, you must need A LOT of care. I may have reconsidered :grin01:

Well as far as I'm concerned, bettas are as low matinence as fishies can get.

The typical petstore betta lifespan, at least what I tell everyone is 2-4years.
But I do know people who have had their's live to be a good 7-9.

Sounds good to me. I don't mean to sound rude but I prefer keeping animals with a shorter lifespan... I hope to god these godfishies don't live to be 20 :p HAHAHA

Gee don't snakes live longer? :p
Oh and as the risk of totally slowing down the loading time of this topic, look at the "what other pets do you have topic" to see all of my bettas.
Although I've recently been having a very bad run with an unidentifiable fungus ;-;

I saw your other bettas :) Beautiful bunch you have. Plans for more?!

Aye Janine I thought that was hilarious (in a sick way) I hope Mr betta was ok...
