Call me Richard
Well, I've been toying with the ideaof getting a tongue piercing for a while now and I'm seriously thinking about it. I was wondering what ya'll thought about them. An if anyonehere has one, if you'd be willing to shed a little light one the process...and amount of pain involved in it.:eek1::)

So, yes or no? If other please state below.

From what I've been told, it's very painful. It's also hard to eat for a couple weeks after because chewing jostles your tongue. And you're going to talk very funny for quite a while due to having a swollen tongue. And infections are common. You can also chip your teeth thanks to it. Oh, and most jobs will make you take it out while you're at work anyway.

I personally also don't see the point.

Least painful piercing I ever had. (have had tongue, lobes (stretched) industrial, conch, vertical labret) I didn't think it hurt at all

Most people say that the clamp hurts the worst, but that didn't bother me either. (there are some places that do it without clamps, but clamps are the norm)

Basically they mark your tongue and prep it, clamp it, stick the needle through, pull the jewelry through, done. Most likely anywhere you go will have done tons of tongue piercings.

Too true. The clamp was the worst part!!
For me it was anyways.
Was a great 18th birthday present to myself. LOL.

I have never had a piercing (not even ears, and not tattoos - I am a big baby about pain!), so I can't speak from experience. But every time I see somebody with a pierced tongue, all I can think of is rotting food stuck in it - not an appealing thought! Even if that doesn't really happen, others may find it gross because of those thoughts.

OTOH - if it really appeals to you and your girl friend / boy friend, etc, and you have researched it and feel it is safe and not too painful, then go for it! Doesn't really matter if some people think it is gross looking, as long as you, and people you care about, like it.

I BELIEVE (but don't know for a fact) that you can take it out if you have to go to a job interview, or go to work where it is not allowed, so that would be a main concern alleviated. And I BELIEVE you can remove it and allow it to grow back, unlike a tattoo. If all of that is true (I would have to research further to be sure), then I would advise any close friend who asked me, to go for it if they have the money and they like it, even if I personally find it unappealing.

You can take it out for short periods of time, but the tongue heals itself very quickly, I wouldn't leave it out too long.

Could you leave it out every day at work, and wear it the rest of the time, if that was required? Or would that cause a problem?

I don't know if I'd personally chance it for more than an hour, but I'm paranoid. I think they make clear 'retainers' that you can put in there in place of a metal bar and make it less visable.

Here's one of my favorite sites for piercing jewelry (I mostly get guaged items there, but they have all kinds of stuff). I found a clear retainer for tongues. Make sure you wear the surgical stainless steel until it is fully healed though.

Ok, so its not o much like an ear piercing where the hole will eventually become permanent? Regardless of how long the piercing has been there it could still heal up?

Btw, thanks everyone for ya'lls input.:)

If it is not recommended to leave it out for at least a whole work shift 5 times per week, then I would have to recommend that anyone CAREFULLY think about getting one. If you have a job that is ok with it, and you ARE QUITE SURE you will be at the same job for a while, then at least that will not be a concern. But in this economy, a lot of people get laid off without expecting it. If that happened, you might find yourself wasting the money (and PAIN) of the piercing, only to have to let it heal up because a new employer will not allow it.

indeed, even fully healed it would probably close up overnight (unless its a huge guage, then it might take a couple days)

I had mine for a few years. When I took it out it was closed (or closed enough that i couldn't fit one in there) over night.

That is very surprising to me! We had an exchange student once who had an eyebrow piercing, and she sometimes let it go for a while, and then used it again. I had no idea the tongue piercing would heal so fast. I guess I shouldn't be so surprised. I have occasionally burned my tongue, and it healed really quickly. I guess it is very important that tongues should heal fast!

I had my lobes pierced when I was very very young (before kindergarten). However my mother hated my complaining when she tried to put in jewelry so she just stopped and presumably let it close up. The last earrings I wore were around kindergarten age. When I was in around 8th or 9th grade I attempted to put some earrings in there and one of them was still completely open! And the other was only partially closed (I could get it in about half way). That amazed me.

Agreed. I had now idea it could close up so quickly, and regardless of the time it had been there too! Valuable info indeed.

Also, very wise words Kathy, (may I call you Kathy?) concerning the economy/job situation. I will definitely keep that in mind.

I took a look at those plastic retainers. One of those definitely sounds like a good idea if I go through with this.

Btw, what are some of the major do's and don'ts during the intial healing process? Other than the obvious tooth brushing and refraining from eating the wasabi which I love so very much.:)

tounges are no pain. and easy to hide. just keep in clean. i think theyre good. im gonna get mine redone again sometime.

Had mine done. Didn't hurt a bit. Ate chinese that night too.

Really it just depends on the person getting it as far as pain, swelling etc. go. Apparently I have superior genes. Any ladies wanna breed?

Seriously though, nothing wrong with it. I ended up taking mine out due to work but even if you get it and keep it for years...you can always take it out.

I've had several piercings: tongue, bellybutton, both nipples and a clithood.

The tongue piercing was actually done twice. The first time I took the piercing the guy did it all wrong. It wasn't in a correct line, neither was it in the middle, so it rubbed against some nerve inside my tongue and felt awkward. Besides it took a long time for it to heal. The tongue kept bleeding like hell and I had to suck ice cubes to supress the bleeding.

Later I decided to take the stud off and let it heal. When the tongue was completely healed I went to another piercing studio (one of which I knew was the best in town) and there a woman pierced my tongue again. She did it perfectly! My tongue didn't get swollen at all, the piercing operation itself didn't hurt at all and everything was great! I was able to talk, eat, do anything normally right after I had it done. No problems what so ever.

So I suggest you do a bit of research before deciding where you'll take the piercing.

Oh, and of all my piercings I guess....well....none of them hurt that much....and quite frankly the bellybutton and tongue piercings only felt good. Nipples and clithood pinched a bit more.... :D

I have had my fair share of pirercing and no the tongue wasn't bad at all!!! Eating, talking, and other things were not hindered and it did heal with no scar when I removed it to work in the hospital in one day. Your tongue cells regenerate faster than any other part of your body!!!!!
