Just wanted to throw in my two cents. When I was in high school I had one. Yes it hurt, so what. I enjoyed it while it lasted, but as time went on it became a bit juvenile for my job and I ended up cracking a tooth (you WILL do the same thing eventually). If it fits who you are now, go for it. It probably wont last, and I still have a noticeable scar tissue on the bottom of my tongue! Just be sure its done in a sanitary environment and you keep it clean. Carpe Diem~

It's your call, and I don't have anything against people who choose to have piercings or tattoos, but a tongue piercing sounds awful. Maybe I'm wrong, but it seems like it would be so uncomfortable, and would make eating a difficult process. Good luck though, and I'm sure it would be easy to remove if you are unsatisfied.

I guess the people who told me it hurts were wimps then. XD

It depends on how you define "hurt" or "pain". And of course we all feel pain differently. Where as most of us (at least I guess it's most of us) will barely feel the pinch of an average injection, to some people that may be a painful experience.

Of course taking a tongue piercing will FEEL. You'll feel the pinch when the needle goes through the upper surface of your tongue, then you'll only feel pressure as the needle pushes forward through your tongue and then you'll feel another pinch when it comes through the lower surface. And then it's done.

But hey, you must've biten your own tongue several times in your life? I can assure you a sharp and rather small needle (of course it's way bigger than injection needles) will make much less harm and cause much less pain than one good bite with your teeth! :D

Regarding job interviews, far too many persons fail to realize the "interview process" begins the moment they set foot on the property, the moment they ask for the application.

As for tongue piercings ( a wound which takes a long time to heal, because it can never dry out), I would refer you to google: "tongue piercing"+HIV

Actually the tongue is one of the quicker healing piercings (unless it is done wrong). Much quicker than many surface piercings. I'd say the healing is around 2-5 weeks or so....compared to say a cartiledge piercing which is more in the range of months to a year. And the risk of infections is virtually 0 if you go to a safe piercing studio that autoclaves everything.

At one point I was heavily involved in the body modification scene. I considered a career in it as well, and read up on a lot of subjects. In my opinion, tongue piercings are a bad idea. You can and will chip teeth and cause gum damage. There is a risk of slight facial paralysis if your piercer is inexperienced. And as an aside, I also think it looks kind of trashy. As far as the pain/healing process, it's not a huge deal. Your piercer should run you through the healing process and tell you how to keep your piercing clean.

Ive had my tongue pierced for over 7 years and at one point I took it out for two whole years.... I try to see if the hole closed by putting it again and to my suprised is still open...my point is I am in favor of body piercings and like anything else "no pain no gain".....:punch:

I'm a professional piercer of almost 9 years now so I have just maybe a wee bit of experience. haha There is lots of misinformation in this thread.

Tongue piercings are one of least painful and easiest healing piercing.

From what I've been told, it's very painful. It's also hard to eat for a couple weeks after because chewing jostles your tongue. And you're going to talk very funny for quite a while due to having a swollen tongue. And infections are common. You can also chip your teeth thanks to it. Oh, and most jobs will make you take it out while you're at work anyway.

I personally also don't see the point.

It's hard to eat for a few days, yes it does swell but proper aftercare will minimize this. Infections are VERY uncommon in the tongue. Teeth can be damaged but changing to a shorter, more form fitting, barbell will greatly reduce this risk. You can also put acrylic beads on as well.

Could you leave it out every day at work, and wear it the rest of the time, if that was required? Or would that cause a problem?

After it's fully healed (about 4-6 weeks) some customers have no problem taking theirs out for a few hours at a time. If you NEED to take it out for work I'd take it out at the beginning of your work day, insert on lunch break, then remove again for rest of your day.

Some customers do have success with leaving theirs our for days, sometimes weeks, at a time without it closing up.

I enjoyed it while it lasted, but as time went on it became a bit juvenile for my job and I ended up cracking a tooth (you WILL do the same thing eventually).

I had mine in for close to 10 years and never once damaged a tooth with it.

9 years of piercing and 15 years of being in tattoo/piercing studios and I don't know of ANY documented cases of someone having facial paralysis from a tongue piercing. The nerves/tendons/muscles that control your face are not located in your tongue.

If the thread starter has any questions regarding the piercing PM me and I'll give you a quick rundown on aftercare and what to expect during the procedure.

It's my humble opinion, that guys shouldn't have tongue rings, but then again, I'm somewhat homophobic. Girls on the other hand, can get away with it.

But, to each his own.

I did some reading on the subject and found that I was misinformed. Sorry guys!

*shrugs* My coworker got her tongue pierced two weeks ago. It's still swollen, and she's still having problems speaking and eating.

Your coworker is not cleaning well then and it may be infected. Mine was barely swollen for three days, I ate whatever I wanted, never chipped a tooth, and enjoyed the piercing immensely. It closes within 24 hours after removal and I have no scar whatsoever. Of all the places to get a piercing it really is the least painful and easiest to take care of.

I wasn't trying to make anyone feel bad by my response. Piercing is just something I'm very passionate about.

If your co-worker really is still experiencing swelling after 2 weeks then she needs to go back and see her piercer (or a different one for a second opinion) cause she may have an infection or her barbell is too short and there's a possibility of infection.

I meant to say she may not be doing proper aftercare but was typing too fast (was trying to watch Cops and type at same time... hahah)

 So it's ok for a gay female to have it but not a gay male?
Yes indeed. hah.

No, it just doesn't look right on a guy. Period. Gay or not, but imo, makes they guy look gay. I'm not trying to insult anyone, matter of fact a good friend of mine has his done, I'm just not a big fan.

From a chicks standpoint men with tongue rings are hot period and the piercing is actually helpful in ways I would be cited for if typed, but not gay at all, lol!!

:p

I had my tongue pierced for a total of a week back when I was 19. Got it done and then got a job in a very proffessional atmosphere so couldn't wear it. Never got it re-done. Was it painful? Uh....YEAH! Right now I have my lobes stretched and that's about as far as I'm gonna go with piercing at my age. Now tattoos........that's a whole 'nother story! Won't ever quit getting those!

Well, that is certainly good information to have!

Its always good to have a woman's perspective on things.:)

Btw, I'm not gay, just incase anyone was wondering.
