Why I Hate Hybrids - Controversial

If you do in the future, can you let me know? as I am looking for some more boas to add to my collection.

If you google: "rosy boa" + breeders, you'll find breeders with available stock. Their busy neonate season follows just behind that of the corn breeders. There are probably quite a few still available, and they're relatively inexpensive. There's a lot of good info/pics/contacts in the rosy forum on this site's sister site, fauna. Access it from the main forum directory page on this board. Good luck. :)

I probably won't.
I like the rosys but...
I have had them constrict food...then forget about it. (that is nasty)
I have had them go off feed, then they are fine.
I have had them go off feed...then die.
I have had them eat one day...be dead the next.

And its not husbandry as I still have the very first male I ever got. He is 10 years old and hes doing GREAT. I researched rosys for months before I got them. I will go 2 years with everything going just fine, then lose 2 in a year. I have never had necropsies done, and probably should have.

In 10 years I have lost 9 rosys...I havent gotten a new rosy in 7 years, and I have 8 left.
In 9 years I have lost 1 cornsnake. (In August)
I have had 11 corns total in my life, and 3 of them are week-old hatchlings.

This thread is over 3 years old, but I thought it might be nice to dredge it up because it chimes in so well with a current thread in the morphs section.

Plus it should give me a chance to get in a lovely arguement with Chris (tyflier) again :)

I was wondering who found the thread under the wood pile.. *LOL*

I don't have a major opinion on hybrids. I guess I'm not a fan of them...just like I'm not a fan of purposely bred mixed breed dogs. I personally don't want a hybrid, nor would I breed any...that's just my opinion. If someone is gonna do it I guess that's their choice...but I wish they were named something better so that one would know it's a hybrid based on it's name. When I first started looking at corn morphs, deciding which ones I liked best...I though a creamsicle was pure corn...there's nothing strikingly noticeable about it that would make me think it wasn't. Same with jungle corn...and rootbeer corn...(though by the time I discovered these I was already skeptic to every morph I came across and would look for any fine print) I mean it has corn right in the name...there's nothing there to suggest it's not a corn.

I guess you never saw pics of my jungle corn, Rio... it's hard to tell if he has any corn blood at all in him.... ;)

I wouldn't breed hybrids, but I do own Rio and he is probably my best "Ambassador Snake." He's been handled by everyone from 4 year old children to 80 year old adults without ever having struck or even looked particularly interested in striking.

Hi Tim :)

Actually Vetusvates repped me for this yesterday (or the day before). I had forgotten all about it. Then I reread the first post and realized that this was basically one of the first posts I ever made as a member of this community! I was thrown off another forum because of...well, acting like an asshat in regards to hybrids. I was devistated at the time, but it turns out it was one of the BEST things that ever happened to me! If I were still a member over there, I may not have discovered this wonderful place!

Well as a noob to snakes in general...I wouldn't have been able to tell the difference between many snake species a few months ago. I guess that's what I mean.

I used to be vehemently opposed to hybrids, to the point I refused to do business with anyone who produced them. I posted back and forth on this forum many, many times when I first signed up about this issue (that and "Okeetees" were the hot topics in 2003). I still will not buy one or support their production in any way, but time has a way of softening things. If Chris "Tyflier" had some milks or hogs I was interested in, I'd buy them right up. I "get" where he's coming from. I don't agree with him, but I can't deny the animal's beauty and there must be a demand. Same with venomoids and commercially collected animals...

The main problems with hybrids I see is when people cross animals so closely related you can't tell its a hybrid and they sell them as pure. For example a rootbeer could be almost impossible to identify by its look alone put if you had a 50/50 milk X corn snake hybrid most people who are interested in breeding snakes and know a thing or to would be able to tell its not a pure animal even if told other wise.

And honestly hybrids wouldn't be that big of a deal at all if people started to sell them for what they were. In theory if people stopped selling hybrids as pure animals as long as the genes aren't to polluted then over many years and many generations you could in theory have 100% corn snakes. but thats only if people started marking hybrids for what they are. That is definitely the thing that make people hate hybrids.

Some people say it may be unethical also but many people consider morphs unethical also. You could even go as far as saying keeping a wild animal in a glass aquarium is unethical. when it comes to hybrids honestly its not a matter of being ethical but a matter of being responsible.

Why does everyone wanna argue with me? ;) :shrugs:

I got no dog in this fight. You all know me...

I personally hate creamsicles and rootbeers, though. Love inter-genus hybrids, hate the sub-species intergrades. Just my opinion...
