Daytona 2009

BUCKETS!!! To the buckets!!! I'll see what I can find! LOL.

OOH! What about little piggy bank-like buckets so people can't see how many tickets are in each one? That way, they won't buy only one to put in the bucket with no tickets. I know I'm going to be putting at least 2-3 tickets in every bucket anyways. LOL. With that idea, I would also start from the smallest prize and work up.

I also think the ticket prices should range between $1 and $5 depending on items in the "group".

That is a great idea!!

We will just need to make sure we have a list of what is available in advance so that people who buy tickets online can let me know which bucket they want their ticket(s) in. It may be a little bit more work - but the more I think about it - the more I think this will make the most people happy.

OK I'm sure someone will tell me if this is unfair but... is it practical to offer all the raffles in advance? Maybe only a few of the really nice Gift Certificates should be offered to everyone in advance, that way shipping to an non attending member won't be an issue. This may mean more competition for the higher end items, but it's either that or more competition for ALL the items. It may be just what we need to also make sure donors get the most charity bang for thier buck for higher end stuff. My head is spinning so much I'm not even sure if that makes sense or not.

I do see your point Jeff - I honestly do. To an extent, I personally feel the same way. There are certain morphs or snakes that I don't particularly like or need for my projects. But I would be happy just to win anything. Again, that is the base idea of a raffle or lottery even - just to win. You don't get to choose your prize when you win the lottery either. You get whatever your ticket says you get....you can't say - but I wanted the $5million dollar prize, not the $50 prize.

Thanks for seeing my point and I see yours as well. And for the record, no offense here...I enjoy lively debates. ;)

If you are happy winning anything, why not pick your win? :sidestep:

And as far as your lottery example...it is true, you don't get to pick you prize after the you have your ticket, but then again, you don't take your winning ticket and then pick from a hat that has free tickets, $100 prize or $450 bazillion pesos prize. If you want the $450 bazillion pesos prize you buy a ticket for THAT prize. Therefore, it seems individual buckets would be more appropriate....but I personally dislike this method (and I don't think I'm alone) due to previously hashed out arguments about lack of participation, etc.

So, what are we left with? There seems to be three main options: Pick your own prize, pick your ticket and get what it says, or pick your bucket (individual buckets). Since there appears to be a lot of debate on this forum about the different ideas, we could always run a poll. :shrugs:

Also, I'll be the mean guy to go on record. I personally don't really care what non-Daytona people think about us having fun and our raffle. Tough luck pal. If you can't come, then that is the way it is. I think we need to be careful about trying to include 'everyone' in this raffle thing. This could really complicate things. While I understand the desire to raise money for the charity, I think to attempt and make the dinner raffle an all inclusive fair might just be unnecessary. I think dinner attenders should get some raffle perks too and I believe we should keep the raffle open to only dinner people. That being said, I have NO problem with breeders offering their own auctions/raffles/sales, etc. to the entire cornsnakes.com forum to raise money for the charity.

Plus, there are those people in California that used to get together for BBQ's (and maybe they still do) and that was the way it was. I didn't get a sandwich FedEx'ed to me. I wasn't in on their fun. I didn't get to make a toast with them. I didn't get sit in a circle and hold hands and sing Kumbaya. I didn't get to see the snakes people brought. ......Nor did I expect to and my feelings are just fine. :duck:

Thanks Jeff....see - to all those naysayers out there...we can have a lively debate without getting off topic or nasty to each other. LOL!

I really don't want to open this up to a poll because I think we are pretty close to making a decision on our own here. I am afraid if we open it up to a poll it is just going to continue the debate outside this thread, dragging more people and more opinions into it. Since we are the ones organizing it - I think we just need to make a decision and stick to it.

And at this point, I am happy with, and think our best option, is to have separate buckets for each prize so people can put their tickets just in the buckets for prizes they want to win.

And I will leave it up to you guys if we want the raffles at dinner to just be for the people attending. I can agree with you that if breeders want to have any kind of raffles/auctions in advance to benefit the charity - that would be wonderful and I will leave it up to their discretion.

So - now that it looks like we mostly have that sorted out...do you all think we need more donations? If so, who should we contact? Any ideas for any other non-live animal prizes?

Yes, this almost feels like "the good 'ol days" again. :) Why can't kids these days learn constructive debate?

That's so sad, you don't know what you are missing. I think I'm going to suggest a web cam for our next Kumbaya circle. It's really life changing. ;) You still don't get any Jalapeno Rice though, and that really is a treat. :)

I will look up both charities tonight, maybe it's time for a poll for that? I'm shooting for starting my two raffles July 1st.

Yes, I think that ANY of the suggestions will work - some better than others, but any will work. Then, after it is finished, we can decide what, if any, changes we can make for next year to make it even better. It is not like we are committed for life to continue to do whatever we do this year, lol! Since Katie is doing most (pretty much ALL, at this point!) of the work, I am content to let her make the final decision, based on the discussion so far. I am confident that she (and everyone here) will be willing to try something different next year if we find some flaws with however we do it this year. I certainly don't expect it to all go PERFECTLY the first year out. But it will still be GREAT FUN, even if there are a few glitches! And I have liked the discussion so far! If we all agreed to exactly the same thing, then it would not only be boring, but it would leave no room for trying new things and improving in the future!

As soon as we decide on a charity FOR SURE, then I will contact a few people I know to see about more donations. But I want to be sure that whatever I tell them will not change after that.

I think I have already said whatever I think needs to be said. I don't care TOO much what we decide, or how we decide it, as long as we agree to renew discussions again for next year if anything we do this year seems to need adjustment. We just need to decide something so we can go forward. And I think that this could be a great model for other shows, too. We often get a small group together for dinner at the Tinley Park show, and other gatherings / dinners have happened at other shows. So it could become more common if we have just too much fun, and others want to get in on it!

You're in luck, I'm saving half of this turkey sandwich for the raffle...

OUCH!! And just when I thought I was done with therapy!

As a non-Daytonaian I'd like to add while it's admirable for some of you to want to include the entire CS.com community I have to agree with Jeff, it's not very practical or fair to those of you who do make the trek if I win the 1.1 Pied Sided Bloods that Rob will be raffling off.:grin01: Attendance should have its priveleges.

That said, I do want to feel a part of so I'll be contributing to the raffle with a hatchling or possibly a pair. I'll have a better idea after my clutches start hatching in the next week or two.

I agree with Jeff. I think all the goodies, except for the auction Carol is hosting for the purpose of raising money for some extra dinners for late comers, (which will be paid for by those late comers, with those funds then going to the charity) should be for people attending the dinner! Or the goings-on afterwards, anyway.

I thought of two really cool prizes I'd like to donate on my drive home from the show today! SECRET!!!

Sweet! I'd buy tickets to see the Fort....No way would I go inside, though. There are birds in there!!!! :sidestep:

I couldn't have said it any better Kathy. I really look at this as the starting point for us to have a bigger and better event each year.

Personally, I think USARK is the best choice because it is specifically for reptiles. PIJAC seems to work with all animals. Since we are reptile related - I think it would make more sense for our donation to go to them.

That said, I do want to feel a part of so I'll be contributing to the raffle with a hatchling or possibly a pair. I'll have a better idea after my clutches start hatching in the next week or two.

Danny - thank you very much! It is greatly appreciated. I will add you to the donator list. Since you will not be able to attend, probably the easiest thing for you will be to do a gift certificate. However you want to set it up - a dollar amount or a specific snake/pair of snakes is fine. If you have any business cards - you can send them to me ahead of the show and we can put them on a table for you there as well.

In fact - business cards - would be a good idea for anyone who is contributing to the raffle. We can include them with the prizes as well as have them available on a table for everyone.

So let me know how everyone feels about USARK - and if everyone is ok with it - then I think we have this part pretty much wrapped up. Just a matter of buying the raffle tickets and confirming donations before the show.

I'll be sending it/them down with Dave (DAND) so it will be there for the raffle.
