Progression thread for my IJ Carpet Pythons

This thread just confirms my absolute love of these snakes. <3

Carpets are amazing! I got hooked when I went to visit some friends, who have a great collection of Carpets, & I got to interact with a few of them. I knew I was doomed to be owned by carpets.
(I *love* their dragon-like heads!) :)

Here's a closeup of Zmeya (RIP) beloved girl. She was so sweet!

Wally is (was) another great snake :)
They lost him too, not too long ago. :( He was about as old as Zmeya was.
If I remember right, either one of or both Wally & Zmeya were original captive owned IJ's. They were both about the same age.
Wally & Zmeya were both larger than normal IJ's.

Yeah, I was just over there last week. She told me about them not too long ago. It's been a rough time for them. They really love their animals.

And those of you seeing how huge this IJ is in this picture, he was a big snake, for an IJ, but Em is also a petite girl. :)

Aww Wally :( That's too bad, he was a cool dude. And yea, I am tiny ;) 5'6" and 115 lol. But my friend Chris went with me and he's close to 6 foot tall, and he had Wally around his neck, and his tail still dragged the ground while his head reached Chris' knee. O.O

Me too! I love that they're not super fat like balls, but not as aloof and high maintenance as GTPs. They're the perfect python, imo. XD I have aaaaaalways wanted one. Always. I WILL own one, when I get my own place. I must.

Yeah, very sad :(
Chris got to meet him, huh? That's cool. :)

Carpets are the perfect Python :)

I've always wanted a big snake, but not something too big to handle. The snake Emily is holding is the perfect size! What kind of housing do you need for a snake that size to be comfortable. I wonder if my new viv would work? What kind of conditions and care do carpet pythons need?

What is considered normal?

Normal depends on what kind you get. Here are a few pics of whats normal for each "variety":
Irian Jaya, usually around 5-6 ft long:

Coastal, usually around 7-8 ft long:

Jaguar, can range between 5-8 ft long:

Diamond, same as above:

Now the rest of these are different variations of the above. Just like corns there are different ways to combine different hets to make "Fancier" Carpet morphs.
Granite (some of Heathers, and my boy Malakai "might" have possible hets for this:
graniteirianjaya.jpg

Tiger...usually comes from a mix of coastal/jaguar:

Irian Jaya Jag:

And of course there are TONS of different combinations.

Hope that helps?

Well, when they are babies they could stay in a 10gal tank with a good amount of hiding spots/branches/etc. They are semi-arboreal so they like to climb and perch. When they are adults, it depends on how big they are but you could probably keep say a 6ft long one in a 60gal tank and it would be happy.

As far as conditions they need about 50-60% humidity when they are not in shed, in shed lean more towards the 60%. They need a type of substrate that can hold the humidity pretty well. So Aspen would not be the first choice. Other than that they are pretty easy. Not as picky humidity wise as a GTP or ATB would be. Them being Pythons though, they can be a bit cage aggressive, as my little guy tends to be.

Hope that helps! :D

Sorry to steal your Thread Heather!!

If I was looking to buy a carpet python (yes, I'm thinking about it!) where would I get one. I did a google search, and there wasn't much and I found nothing near the pricing mentioned. Any recommendations?

Yes! There is a forum with TONS of breeders. That's where I learned everything I know is from them. If you can find a breeder or owner near your area, see if you can go and handle/experience these guys when they are adults. I did that just to make sure I was going to be ok with the size/temperament. And that way you don't get "burned out" with their sometimes nasty attitudes when they are young. Hope you get one and if you do, gotta take pictures! :D

Thank you for stepping in, Emily :)
Sorry for not responding, I had a bad week last week & did not feel very social.

I have been spending some time over there, thanks Emily. And I've had some bad weeks recently too, Heather, so no sweat. I appreciate all the help I get over here at CS. Unfortunately, there doesn't seem to be a lot going on, snake wise, here in my area. I would love to get to handle a carpet, and I have been puting out feelers. I've concidered using my new viv for a carpet...I'd like to find an inland carpet...but I've been told it's not big enough. It has 6.3 cu ft of floor space, but is only 19 1/2" deep inside. I have checked out the nice cages at Constrictors NW and may get one if I find a carpet.
I did see a woman at an event at my daughter's school that brought in some reptiles. I'll have to see if I can find out where she came from, and what she has.

Nick Mutton has some Inlands, I believe.
It is best to check them out first hand, to be familiar with temperment & such, but once you know which kind of carpet you want, & have done your research on them, having one shipped to you from a reputable breeder is just fine.

Good luck on your search, it is fun & worth it once you find one.

No problem :) I like to help where I can. Hope you're doing better! <3

If you get a baby, you don't have to worry about a huge cage right away. I have Malakai (about the same size as a 6-8 month old carpet) in my 15 gallon tall tank, and he still has plenty o' room. Once he gets too big for that I'm going to have my crafty friend build me a tank. :)

Good luck!

It's all Heather's fault. She got me hooked on IJs and then I discovered the JCP... I think if I had to choose, I'd pick up a JCP. I love the yellow and black together, it's so gorgeous!!!

Your babies are adorable, Heather. :)

I love the coloring on the jungles, but from what I've read, the inlands' temperament is usually better, they're more tolerant of lower humidity and temps, and they get a bit larger. This would be my "big snake" fix, yet still manageable by a single person. There are other big snakes I've considered, but one of these is probably best for what I want. I don't have the room, or support, for a really big, heavy snake like a burm or retic. I live in a condo. If I can find someone who is breeding them this year, I'll try to get an inland. I have a 10 gallon tank I can put him/her in to start, then I'll move it to my new viv. If/when it outgrows that, I'll get something else, and my corn will get the home I originally made for him. We'll see.
