Progression thread for my IJ Carpet Pythons

BTW. I apologize for hijacking your thread, Heather. But in my defence, you started it by posting those pics and getting me started on carpets!

I agree. These would certainly be my big snake fix also. I wouldn't be comfortable owning anything bigger than a Carpet. When I do get either an IJ or a JCP (or maybe both? lol) I'd like to have a nice arboreal display cage set up for him/her. I just think they're so stunning and eye-catching, I'd love to have them sitting in my living room to awe my guests. :grin01:

Since they aren't a very heavy bodied snake, they're kind of like a giant corn, size wise. Even if I had one that got to 9-10 feet, I think I could handle it throughout it's life. How many people buy Burms or Retics and end up getting rid of them when they get over 10ft? I think it's irresponsible to own a snake like that unless you are prepared to take care of it throughout it's life. That doesn't just mean room, and the finances to feed it and pay for vet visits, but also support since it's crazy to try to deal with a 15-20 foot snake alone.

Just out of curiosity, does anyone reading this thread have a large carpet, and do you handle and feed it when you are alone, or is someone else always present.

A friend of mind had a large JCP at one point. I think it was around 6-8ish feet, if I recall. He handled it alone when feeding, though myself and his wife were present, he didn't require our assistance to take it out, hold it, or feed it.

That's why I'm planning on getting a carpet. I'm a single dad, and I think I would be comfortable feeding and handling even an 8' carpet alone, though I don't think I would hang one around my neck without someone else present!

They are quite easy to handle at 8ft... But they do like to climb and their reach is phenomenal.... They can quite easily grab things 4 or 5 ft behind you.... Or take shelves out.....

Maybe I'll get one of those floor to ceiling cat perches to give him something to climb on besides my shelves!

ours likes to climb...We let him out about once a week or so for exercise in the living room...He can be fed and handled by just one person, altho he likes to keep moving and it's a workout trying to "hand over hand" him lol

Love the pictures Heather, keep 'em coming :)

Here's some more pics for you...

Tyr, my 3-ish yr old Jungle Carpet.
Jezanna, one of my babies, she's almost 9 months old.
Karma, another baby IJ, who hatched on my birthday (6 months old)
Daray, a yearling IJ, from the same parents that Jezanna is from (they're both possible het Granite)
& Skadi, IJ yearling that came to me barely bigger thanmy babies born this year.

They are all beautiful, as is their owner. I've always had a soft spot for a pretty girl with a snake around her neck.:devil01:

If I feel comfortable handling an 8 foot plus IJ....I'm pretty sure you could too :) But that being said, I did have 3 other people there with me....and it was Wally, so...basically I was handling a big legless, scaled dog. lol

And btw Heather, Skadi is looking good! Her and Malakai are getting the same yellow in the black near their tail end. It looks so cool in my opinion. :)

Honestly, I would be perfectly comfortable handling a snake of any size as long as other knowledgable people were there. My concern is that I'm home alone most of the time, or here with only my 8 year old daughter. By the time my carpet gets very big, Sarah will be big enough to lend a hand, and I'll make sure she knows the dangers of a big snake, and what to do if one wraps you up.

BTW, I'm a bit of an adrenalin junkie. I used to race motorcycles, I like "drifting" (powerslides back when I was young) and a little over a year ago I almost broke my hip when my kite yanked me off the ground and threw me 40 feet (it stalled and then a gust took it). I would LOVE to get the chance to hold, alone, a 60 or 80 pound snake.

Thanks Em, I'm still watching her, not quite ready to assume she's going to be ok.
Rex, Em here is a fellow motorcycle rider. (I had one for a short period of time, but ended up selling in, partially because I never got comfortable with all of the traffic here.
